How long does it take to learn Chinese?

It depends on your goal and how many hours you put in. The basics (saying hello, introducing yourself, counting, shopping) take one month of daily study. With 2 or 3 hours a week, roughly what 20 or 30 minutes a day adds up to, the previous HSK estimated one semester for its level 1 and two years for level 4, which asks for 1,200 words and about 1,060 characters. For professional proficiency, the US Foreign Service Institute (FSI) estimates 88 weeks of intensive classes, about 2,200 hours, for English speakers like you.
The most-cited figure: 2,200 hours
The FSI, which trains US diplomats, puts Mandarin Chinese in its group of the hardest languages for English speakers: 88 weeks, about 2,200 class hours, to reach level 3 on the ILR scale in speaking and listening, which means professional working proficiency. Its students get 23 hours of class and about 17 hours of independent study every week.
| Language (for English speakers) | Weeks of training according to the FSI |
|---|---|
| Italian, Portuguese | 24 |
| Spanish, French | 30 |
| German | 36 |
| Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic | 88 |
The US Defense Language Institute runs a similar Mandarin course: 64 weeks, 7 hours a day, five days a week.
These figures are for full-time intensive programs with a very high goal. Because they're calculated for native English speakers, they apply directly to you, but keep in mind that they assume class every day. To travel or have basic conversations, you need much less.
What the HSK estimated by level
The official syllabi of the previous HSK said how much study each level required:
| Level (previous HSK) | Words | Characters* | Study time |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 150 | 174 | One semester, with 2 or 3 class hours a week |
| HSK 2 | 300 | 347 | Two semesters (one year) |
| HSK 3 | 600 | 617 | Three semesters (a year and a half) |
| HSK 4 | 1,200 | 1,064 | Four semesters (two years) |
| HSK 5 | 2,500 | 1,685 | More than two years, with 3 or 4 class hours a week |
| HSK 6 | More than 5,000 | 2,663 | No estimate |
* The previous HSK had no character list: we counted the distinct characters in its word list (2012 version), including the lower levels.
The new HSK, whose syllabus was published in November 2025, has more words per level (300 at level 1) and gives no official number of hours. We cover it in the new HSK 1 vocabulary list.

See the appWhat about the CEFR (A1, B2…)?
The organizers of the previous HSK said its levels 1 to 6 matched A1 through C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). In 2010, the German association of Chinese teachers (Fachverband Chinesisch) rejected that: according to its analysis, HSK 4 corresponded to A2 and HSK 6 to B2, and reaching B2 took between 1,200 and 1,600 class hours, plus self-study. The new HSK has no official equivalence with the CEFR.
What to expect from 20 or 30 minutes a day
Twenty or thirty minutes a day adds up to about 2.3 to 3.5 hours a week, a pace similar to the 2 or 3 weekly class hours the previous HSK based its estimates on. At that pace, as a rough guide:
- In a month: pinyin, tones, greetings, numbers and your first 90 characters, with the 30-day plan.
- In a semester: the old HSK 1 level: 150 words, written with about 170 characters.
- In a year: the old HSK 2 level: 300 words and about 350 characters, enough for simple conversations about your life. That's as many words as the new HSK 1 asks for.
- In two years: the old HSK 4 level: 1,200 words and about 1,060 characters.
Per day, that may look slow: 1,064 characters in two years is about 10 a week, fewer than 2 a day. That's because an HSK level isn't just recognizing characters: it also asks for the words built with them, the grammar and listening comprehension.
What if you learn 5 characters a day?
In our guide on how many Chinese characters you need, we calculate that at 5 new characters a day you get to know the 1,000 most frequent ones in about six and a half months. That isn't a contradiction: they're two different ways of counting.
| 5 new characters a day | Class pace of the previous HSK | |
|---|---|---|
| What it counts | Characters you see for the first time and review: you recognize them with their pinyin and meaning | A full level: characters, words, grammar and listening |
| Time | Starts at about 20 minutes a day, but the review grows every week | 2 or 3 hours a week |
| New characters | 35 a week | about 10 a week |
| 1,000 characters | about six and a half months | almost two years |
Both figures are useful, but for different things. If you study 20 or 30 minutes a day, use the second one as your benchmark. The first is the speed for getting to know characters: since every new character adds review, keeping it up for months takes more and more time, and knowing a character still isn't mastering it.
What speeds you up and what slows you down
| Speeds you up | Slows you down |
|---|---|
| Studying every day, even a little | Studying irregularly, only when you have time |
| Practicing the tones from the start | Leaving pronunciation for later |
| Learning characters by their parts and in order of frequency | Copying isolated characters over and over |
| Listening to and speaking with people | Only reading |

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to learn basic Chinese?
To say hello, introduce yourself, count and ask for simple things, one month of daily study is enough. For the HSK 1 vocabulary, the previous HSK estimated one semester with 2 or 3 class hours a week.
How many hours do you need for HSK 1?
The previous HSK syllabus estimated one semester with 2 or 3 class hours a week. The new HSK, whose syllabus was published in November 2025, gives no official number of hours.
Can you learn Chinese in a year?
It depends on how much you study. With 20 or 30 minutes a day, in a year you reach roughly the old HSK 2 level: 300 words, about 350 characters and simple conversations about your life. With more time, at 5 new characters a day, you can get to know over 1,000 characters in a year, although mastering them along with their words takes longer. An advanced level takes several years.
How many characters can I learn a day?
At the class pace the previous HSK used for its estimates (2 or 3 hours a week), about 10 a week, together with their words and grammar. If you focus on recognizing characters, 5 new ones a day is a demanding but doable pace, always with daily review.

Which CEFR level does each HSK level match?
For the previous HSK, its organizers said levels 1 to 6 matched A1 to C2, but a German association of Chinese teachers rejected that and placed HSK 6 at B2. The new HSK has no official equivalence.
